The Barbel (Barbus barbus)
Barbel are easily recognisable by the four huge barbs on the front on the mouth, hence the latin name barbus barbus. Generally they have a white underbelly and a bronze/gold back and fins. And these colours hide them well against gravel beds and areas they like to lurk during the day. Although there are acceptions to the rule most Barbel can be found in clean fast flowing water especially where gravel beds, weed cover, weirs, undercut banks and tree covered areas are present. Barbel are also one of the hardest fighting fish in the UK, pound for pound and you will never forget hooking your first!
