Fishing for Bream on the river.

As we arrived at the river we could tell straight away the water was a little low but there had been a little rain the day before which had freshened it up some what. We had been told that plenty of bream were being caught in the area at evening so we decided to fish with a small leger and feeder rigs in the deeper water in the middle of the river using breadcrumb, worms, meat and sweetcorn.

The rigs were simple to setup. Mainline was between 4-5lb with a 2.5lb hooklength and 14 hook. Open end feeders were used in conjunction with plastic leger stops. Using plastic leger stops really stops there being much resistance when the bream pick up the bait.

It was about 6.00pm by the time we had setup and cast out. The water in the middle of the river was about 8 feet deep and the flow was fairly slow. We fed the swim regularly with a handfull of small pellets and corn as loose feed and cast on top of this. Grant started on a leger rig with meat and I was fishing with a small open end feeder with bread crumb and worm as hookbait.

For the first 2 hours we were hitting small bites and were catching a steady flow of small perch, roach, chub and eels. And finally the first bream around 3lb turned up on my feeder rig with worm. From then on we were plagued with eels on the worms and meat so we decided we would change to corn. At this time it was about 9.00pm and was starting to get dark when my tip flew around and another bream around 4lb was netted. From then on untill around 12.00pm (when we ran out of bait) we caught a nice succession of bream averaging around 4lb. The biggest one caught was a real slab at 5lb 6oz.

A great evening session on the river for bream and the best thing about the stretch we were fishing was it's free as long as you have a rod licence!
