I can't think of many more satisfying ways to fish for Perch than with a big fat juicy lobworm and especially with light rigs on rivers. More often than not will produce the bigger perch in the swim and can bring a thumping bite!

So during a summer session on our local river Alan was fishing with just such a rig with a big juicy lobworm on. A small free running lead, plastic stopper and a hook around a size 8-10. He was fishing in 3 feet of slack water in between the various weed beds and rushes which are common on this particular stretch, and had a fantastic result. After a walloping bite and the typical shaking of the head he knew exactly what he had hooked and quickly shouted upstream to me. I arrived to see him standing there with a huge stripy in the net and calling for the scales. It weighed in at 2lb 8oz, which isn't going to make the papers but who cares when they are this big! A very satisfying day and it's really given us a lot more confidence to fish for the Perch more in the area in the future. So watch this space!

Perch aren't the biggest of fish but there is something that makes you go back for more! Tristan Bawn & Alan Phillips
