After hearing stories of a big head of pound plus Rudd in one of my local lakes I just had to go and have a go for them. So with a leger rod in one hand and a bag of bread and sweetcorn in the other I headed to the lake on a summer's evening. Rudd tend to give themselves away by taking insects off the surface this time of year so locating them was fairly easy. And when I did find them it looked like a golden shimmering shoal just hanging around a weed bed. |

For about 10 minutes I flicked out a couple of grains of corn until they were feeding confidently. Then I hooked a single grain of sweetcorn on my size 16 freelined hook and gently flicked it out. Almost immediately the tip flew around and I had a nice size Rudd on. In the past I haven't had many rudd over about 8oz so this was great! As soon as it was in the net I knew it was a pb! Not a monster but big enough for me and great sport. I spooked them with this fish so for the next 10 minutes I just fed freebies in until the fish were feeding confidently again and out the rig went. And again straight away the tip flew around and another nice Rudd was on. And this one weighed in at 1lb 5oz! By giving them a chance to get confident again I caught a steady flow for about an hour until something swirled nearby and they vanished. Rudd aren't the biggest fish in UK waters but are great sport and a nice way to spend an afternoon on the lake. |
