If you are a newcomer to fishing then you need to read this page, which will hopefully explain a little more about how fishing licence's work in the UK. First of all you need to buy a NRA rod licence before you can go fishing anywhere except sea fishing which is free. You can buy a rod licence from any post office and now you can buy them online from the Environment Agency. When you have a rod licence you are ready to fish, but there are many clubs and syndicates around which usually have a handful of lakes and river stretches. Which of these you choose is up to you and its worth asking in your local tackle shop because they can usually put you in touch with the clubs in your local area. There are free lakes, stretches on rivers and canals in the uk but again its worth asking before you go to these places. Finally there are the pay to fish lakes where you can turn up, pay a small fee and fish the lake for a day. For more information on where to go in the uk visit the uk-active fisheries guide.

Be aware that if you fish with out a licence your tackle can be taken away from you until you pay a hefty fine so its better to pay the initial licence fee. Bailiff's patrol most waters and will ask to check your licence, but recently there have been incidents involving bogus bailiff's so if you are asked to prove you have a licence then you can ask to see their bailiff identification. If they are a real bailiff they will produce this this identification straight away if not they are bogus. With any licence it's a good idea to keep the licence number written down somewhere in case of loss or damage. It's also a good idea to keep any licence's in a waterproof cover or bag. Finally when you have got the correct licence's for where you want to go always read the rules because the can vary allot between clubs and syndicates.

Tight lines and wet nets.
