Injections and medication
This information is just advice so always contact your local health centre or clinic for up to date information and always read the small print if you take other medication or have any other health problems. This is just to give you an idea of what you will need when you go.
  • Yellow Fever. You need this jab to enter the country and with good reason. Yellow fever is common in east Africa so you need to have this at least a 2 weeks before you leave. When I had mine done it cost about £40 but you can get it on the NHS but don't ask how I don't want to go into that minefield!
  • Malaria. Now some people don't have malaria tablets when they go and some stop when they get above a certain height. My advice is to ignore what you are told and take Malarone every day you are there. Why? well we were told that mosquitoes didn't go above a certain height, yet on the last but one camp the little blighters got me!
  • Hepatitis A & Typhoid Fever. A combined jab now takes care of these two. It's best to have this one at least a month in advance. It was free for me so I guess it's free for everyone. It leaves you with a soar arm for a couple of days but no real side effects.
  • Diptheria, Tetanus and Polio booster. This is much the same as above. It's a combined jab and was free for me. Soar arm too but no side effects.
