Sugar Loaf (Black Mountains) |
Sugar Loaf is situated in the black mountains in Wales. The best way to get there is to go to Abergavenny and follow the signs for the A40. Once on this road you need to take a turning on the right which is sign posted for the Sugar Loaf view point. There you can park your car and get onto the paths and routes to the top. |
| We parked up and planned our route. Because it was quite busy we decided to take a longer and more interesting route to the top. From the car park we took a path east towards the woods and down the valley to the various streams which fall away from this mountain. The woods were nice and covered by the valley so we were starting to get a little warm in the odd break of sun. But nice to add the woods into the walk. As we left the valley it suddenly got a bit windier and alot cooler. |
| The path we took to the top was fairly easy going with a nice climb near the end. The wind was really picking up by now and when we reached the top it was hard to stand up in. As we walked across the top we kept finding small pockets of people hid away from the wind between cracks in the rocks. |
| The view was worth every step. You can see most of the black mountains from here and the river Usk glimmers. Standing on the rocks for a picture was a little harder than it looks. Anything dropped here would be blown off the mountain never to be seen again. |
| We took the path to the west which led down to Mynydd Pen-Y-Fat where we found a path going down to the pine forest. We stopped down here next to another small stream and cooked up some food to warm us up. It's not every time you can stop and cook your own food so it was a nice novelty. |
| This was a nice place to stop and other walks were discussed and were already being made up so we will go back very soon. After a long rest and time for the food to go down we headed back onto the path and followed it south towards the main path and back to the view point and car park. This is one walk which should appeal to beginners and the more experienced. |
