Snowdonia (Snowdon horseshoe)
This was a classic route and if you are a fan of scrambling, Grib Goch is a must. The route takes you over Snowdon as well and the route we took also avoided the crowds. There are some amazing views accross the mountains and also a few straight down!!!! To follow the route we did that day you can follow it on your map using the information below. One of the classic walking and scrambling routes in the UK.
Snowdon Horseshoe with crowd-beating start * Park at GR658542 * Descend 100 m to stream and follow vague path on west side to stream junction * Path becomes slightly clearer on north side. Follow to Pen-y-Pass 359m (one hour from car) * Follow path to Crib Goch 921. Grade 1 scrambling loads of handholds but some lose rock and few options for escape. (Best avoided in bad or suspect weather) * Traverse ridge (very exposed to north side, head for heights required)
* Some minor route finding required at final obstacle before descending to col (follow route by looking for polished rocks) * Cross a grassy col at 850m. * Rout continues in westerly direction straight up the ridge to summit of Garnedd Ugain 1001m (some easy scrambling but path also available) * Train tracks, path, Snowdon summit and crowds should now be in sight (from Trig point continue southwest 400 meters to hit path)
* Follow path and crowds south to reach summit 1085 (An otherwise great summit ruined by a train, restaurant and tourists) * An obvious path 200 meters south of the summit descends in an easterly direct to a col 744m and then to the double peaked summit of Y Lliwedd 898 and 893. * Follow ridge but do not descend to Pen-y-Pass, continue to Galt y Wenalt 619m GR643534 * Descend grassy ridge in northeast direction (Another faint path, special attention to conditions underfoot if grass is wet) * Cross pipe at obvious location * Zig zag down to cottages and climb back up to car. * Approx total time 7-8 hours A.Caird
