Northants MiniMoto...... - Bl R Clutch Relines
Any one who knows me will know how much trouble iv had with the clutch in my Bl R. I'm not alone with this problem, many other people have suffered with clutch's burning out or just wearing out in no time at all.
At one point i was going through 2 standard clutches in a 4 hour period!, i think a big factor is setting up the clutch correctly in the first place, bedding in the clutch correctly and having the correct gearing for the track you are on. I have tried a Polini 2 shoe clutch and that unfortunately lasted 1 night before it overheated and then disintegrated ! this i think was mainly due to me not having the correct rear sprocket on and not bedding it in properly. The next thing i tryed was the Polini 2 shoe with kevlar relines from MiniMoto Racing and a 75tooth rear sprocket (bearing in mind i weigh I5 stone) , this i found to be much better, the first night i spent bedding in the clutch. This is a bit boring as the bike bogs down and you have to go slow for what seems like ages. After the bedding in was complete i removed the clutch and de-glazed the shoe's, the ware was acceptable and the clutch was biting hard.
On the next outing i ran the Polini clutch for 2 10 min sessions with no problems, HOWEVER, my friend (who weighs 17stone and has never ridden a race minimoto before) managed to burn out and totally destroy the clutch altogether in less than 10 min's!
By this point im Gutted and had enough. Im actually starting to think of chucking the bike in and calling it quits!

However, i had in my possession a freshly relined (with a new kevlar material) original 3 shoe Chinese clutch, there was still an hour left to use the track so i put it in and spent 10 min's setting it up.
I got the bite set so the clutch came in just before the power band, now bear in mind this clutch is an original Chinese one, it has new linings that have NOT been bedded in, and in the past running this config the clutch would last about 3 laps and then self destruct. I ran this clutch for 10-15 min's as hard as i could, i used full throttle as often as i could and i expected the clutch to die or at least be worn almost completely away by the end of the session.
The next morning i removed the new clutch from the bike and was stunned to see that not even 50% of each shoe had been in contact with drum! that the ware on each shoe was insignificant, in fact i ran a piece of sand paper over the shoe's to remove the slight glaze and the clutch looked just like when Nobby gave it to me! I had been told that these relines where damn good but me being me was very skeptical, but after seeing the results for myself on my own bike im willing to agree.
Obviously more testing will be done, but if they continue to perform as the are then i will expect to get 3 to 4 months use out of them, which when you think i was going through 2 standard clutches in a 4 hour session, ain't bad!
